What Is an Ergonomic Wheelchair? Karman S-ERGO Models Compared
An ergonomic wheelchair is a manual wheelchair built around a shaped seat instead of a conventional flat seat. If you have shopped for a lightweight chair, you have probably seen the term next to models like the Karman S-ERGO 115, 115Q, 125F and 305. This guide explains what "ergonomic" means on these chairs, how the models differ and what to check before you order.
This article explains equipment features. It is not medical advice. Seating and positioning needs vary from person to person, so consult a healthcare professional before choosing a wheelchair for a medical or positioning need.
What Is an Ergonomic Wheelchair?
Many traditional folding wheelchairs use a flat seat frame.
An ergonomic wheelchair changes the seat itself. On the Karman S-ERGO line, the seat uses Karman's S-Shape ergonomic seating system. Karman describes it as a contoured seating surface rather than the flat seat found on many traditional wheelchairs.
The S-ERGO chairs we carry share a few other traits:
- A lightweight folding aluminum frame
- Removable seat and back cushions with breathable mesh upholstery
- A folding seat and backrest, with a folded width of about 12 inches
- Removable swing-in/away footrests
- Flat-free polyurethane rear wheels and 7-inch front casters
- A 250 lb weight capacity
"Ergonomic" here describes the chair's design. It does not mean the chair treats or prevents any condition. If comfort or pressure is a concern, ask a healthcare professional about seating and cushion options.
How the S-ERGO Models Differ
The S-ERGO chairs look alike, but each one has a key difference. Most shoppers choose based on three questions: Do the rear wheels need to come off? Do the armrests need to flip back? Who will push the chair?
S-ERGO 115: fixed rear wheels
The S-ERGO 115 is a self-propelled chair with fixed 24-inch rear wheels and fixed padded armrests. It weighs about 25 lb without footrests. It comes in 16, 18 or 20-inch seat widths, all with a 17-inch seat depth.
S-ERGO 115Q: quick-release rear wheels
The 115Q has the same seating, weight and seat sizes as the 115. The difference is its 24-inch quick-release rear wheels, which come off the frame. That can make the chair easier to load into a car or store in a tight space.
S-ERGO 125F: flip-back armrests
The 125F weighs 25 lb without footrests. Its armrests flip back, which gives more side access for transfers and lets the chair move closer to a table or desk. It comes in 16 or 18-inch seat widths. Its rear wheels are standard, not quick-release.
S-ERGO 305: adjustable seat height
The 305 weighs 29 lb without riggings. It combines quick-release rear wheels, flip-back armrests with height-adjustable arm pads, and a seat-to-floor height you can set at 18, 19 or 20 inches. It comes in 16 or 18-inch seat widths.
S-ERGO 115-TP: transport version
If the user will not push themselves, the S-ERGO 115-TP is a transport chair with 14-inch rear wheels, made to be pushed by a caregiver or companion. It weighs 22 lb without riggings, comes in 16, 18 or 20-inch seat widths and has a 12-inch folded width.
S-ERGO Comparison Table

| S-ERGO 305 | 29 lb without riggings | 16", 18" | 24" quick-release | Flip-back, height-adjustable pads | Users who need seat-height options |

What to Look For in an Ergonomic Wheelchair
Seat width and depth
Choose the seat width based on the user's seated hip width, clothing and positioning needs. A seat that is too narrow may feel tight. A seat that is wider than needed can make positioning and self-propelling harder. All S-ERGO models above have a 17-inch seat depth. Our guide on how to measure for a wheelchair walks you through it.
Overall width vs. your doorways
Seat width is not the chair's full width. For example, the 125F is about 23 inches wide open with a 16-inch seat, and about 25 inches with an 18-inch seat. The 305 is about 24 and 26 inches. Measure doorways, hallways and bathroom entries before you order.
Chair weight and folding
Listed weights on these chairs are without footrests or riggings. The chair will weigh more once footrests are on. If someone will lift the chair into a car often, quick-release wheels (115Q or 305) let you take the rear wheels off before lifting. Our article on lightweight wheelchairs that fit in your car covers trunk measuring.
Armrest style
Fixed armrests stay put. Flip-back armrests (125F and 305) move out of the way for side transfers. Transfer needs vary, and a caregiver or healthcare professional may still need to help, depending on the user's mobility and balance.
Legrests
The 115, 115Q and 125F can be ordered with standard or elevating legrests. For the 115, you can also add the EL-S115 elevating legrest pair later. If elevating legrests are recommended for a medical reason, consult a healthcare professional about fit and use.
Seat height
Seat-to-floor height affects how the user's feet reach the floor and how the chair fits under tables. The 125F lists a 19-inch seat-to-floor height. The 305 adjusts to 18, 19 or 20 inches.

How to Choose: Quick Checklist
- Decide who will move the chair. If the user self-propels, look at the 115, 115Q, 125F or 305. If a caregiver pushes, look at the 115-TP.
- Measure the user's seated hip width and pick 16, 18 or 20 inches.
- Measure doorways and compare them with the chair's overall open width.
- Think about transport. Choose quick-release wheels if the chair goes in a car often.
- Think about transfers. Choose flip-back armrests if side transfers are part of the daily routine.
- Choose standard or elevating legrests.
- Confirm the user's weight is within the 250 lb capacity.
- Consult a healthcare professional if you are unsure about size, positioning or mobility needs.
