Transport Chair vs. Manual Wheelchair: Who Will Push?

Start with a typical outing. Who pushes from the front door to the car, and who moves the chair once you arrive? A transport chair generally has small rear wheels and relies on a companion to push. A self-propelled manual chair typically has large rear wheels with hand rims the rider can reach.

When a companion does the pushing

For a trip from a parking lot to an appointment, check handle height, how the brakes operate and how the chair fits in the car. Ask the companion to try turning and stopping the exact model. Smaller wheels alone tell you little about lifting weight or how a chair handles a threshold.

When the rider wants to move independently

A rider who wants to move between rooms without a companion needs a way to propel and steer the chair. When both people will use the chair

Test both roles on the same outing. Can the rider reach the wheels comfortably? Can the companion reach the handles and load the folded frame? Record overall width, folded size and lifting weight for the model you try.
